This is a perfect activity for preschoolers who are beginning to learn their letters and numbers. I found this idea over at Hands On As We Grow, and as luck would have it, I found both foam letters and numbers in the dollar section at Target a couple weeks ago (thank you back-to-school deals).
To keep her interest level up while searching for all 26 letters, I “hid” them in places where she could easily find them. She often brought 2-3 letters back to the sheet at a time, matched them and then headed back out in search for more.
One note: the foam letters I purchased are all in capital form. I tried writing the lower case to have her match its capital counterpart, but found she’s a little too young for that still. At 3, matching the cap with the cap is challenging enough.
Once we completed the letters, we did our numbers. She found 4 numbers before she decided she had enough. Still, I would rank this activity an “A” because she had fun, she was challenged and it enforced what she’s learning at preschool – with a little touch from mama.
