Things I Love Thursday: Music & Lyrics

I’ve always had a great appreciation for music.  When anyone asks me what genre I prefer, I go with whatever I’m feeling at that moment because I have no one favorite consistently.  Take my daily commute for example – oftentimes I need a little beat in the mornings to get me going, but on my way home, I’m ready for a little classical chill-out.  When I cook dinner, I love Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole and when I’m cleaning, I like old school Will Smith or Black-Eyed Peas.

What I love more than just a good rhythm, are great lyrics.  Lyrics that involve me in the song, whether they are meaningful or just simply funny.  Lyrics that when I hear the song come on, I crank it up and belt out every word like I own the copyright.

Although I could write a list a mile long, here are a few songs off the top that I think have great lyrics for one reason or another:

1.  Lost by Coldplay
Just because I’m losing, doesn’t mean I’m lost….doesn’t mean I’ll stop…doesn’t mean I will cross…

2.  With My Own Two Hands by Jack Johnson/Ben Harper
Oh I can change the world, with my own two hands…and make it a better place, oh-with my own two hands…and make it a kinder place, with my own two hands…oh with my own, with my own two hands…

3.  Things We’ve Handed Down by Marc Cohn
Will you laugh just like your mother, will you sigh like your old man, will some things skip a generation like I’ve heard they often can.  Are you a poet or a dancer, a devil or a clown, or a strange new combination of the things we’ve handed down…

4.  Little Man Big Man by Toad the Wet Sprocket
Little man big man what’s inside; it’s all in the places where we find our pride; if there was a soul lost by the road, who’d pass by who’d take it home…

5.  Beautiful World by Colin Hay
My my my, it’s a beautiful world; I like driving in my car. Roll the top down, sometimes I travel quite far.  Drive to the ocean, stare up at the stars.  I like driving in my car.

6. Home by Daughtry
Be careful what you wish for ‘cause you just might get it all…and then some you don’t want…

7.  Short Skirt/Long Jacket by Cake
I want a girl who gets up early. I want a girl who stays up late.  I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity. Who uses a machete to cut through red tape…

8.  Recipe for Love by Harry Connick, Jr
It doesn’t need sugar ‘cause it’s already sweet.  It doesn’t need an oven ‘cause it’s got a lot of heat.  Just add a dash of kisses to make it all complete.  And that’s the recipe for making love…

9. If I Had a Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladies
If I had a 1,000,000 (If I had a 1,000,000), I’d buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that’s cruel)…

What are some of your favorite songs and lyrics?
